Melons are delicious and most of us will have tried at least a couple of the many varieties available, but how much do you really know about them?
Cultivation
Melons were cultivated in Ancient Egypt and first introduced to Europe during the Renaissance (14th –16th centuries).
Growing on the vine
Melons grow on trailing vines and belong to the same family as cucumbers, marrows and squashes.
Sugar content
This fruit contains only about half the sugar content of an apple or pear, weight for weight.
The melon rind
The inner rind of a melon can be used to make jams or pickles.
The melon flavour
A sprinkling of salt and pepper or ground ginger will enhance the flavour of a melon.
