Our Story 1960-1970

 

1963

Fyffes considers and acts upon the need to diversify into the general fresh fruit and vegetable business and lessen dependence on just bananas following serious issues that caused it to lose long established banana supplies.

1964

George Jackson and Company Limited (Birmingham) is acquired by Fyffes.

Thompson and Company (Parkway) Limited of Sheffield is also acquired by Fyffes. Thus paving the way for Fyffes to enter the fresh fruit and general produce trades.

 

 

1965

Banana Importers of Ireland Limited (B.I.I) is formed to cater for the banana needs of Ireland’s leading ripeners. Led by Neil McCann, B.I.I has a powerful competitive edge as bananas can now be delivered directly to Ireland for the first time, from the country of origin. As a result Ireland received the freshest bananas in Europe, greater employment was given to the country and the opportunity of exporting bananas to the UK was born.

1968

Fruit Importers of Ireland Limited (F.I.I) is formed, under the leadership of Neil McCann. More leading brands from around the world are distributed on an exclusive basis through the Group, such as Jaffa (Israel), Cape and Outspan (both South Africa).

1969

1st May 1969: George Monro Produce Limited becomes one of several general produce companies now controlled by Elders & Fyffes - part of the policy of expansion into the non-banana sector.

Southern Fruit Suppliers of Waterford is taken over.

 

 



 

1972

Sheil and Byrne Limited the fruit and vegetable supplier to Superquinn is acquired, along with further expansion in Kilkenny and Tralee.
