Bananas are a particular favourite amongst sports people because of the banana’s unique combination of vitamins, carbohydrates and potassium.

Bananas are rich in carbohydrate - an important source of energy for athletes - and have significantly higher levels than any other fruit.

Bananas contain three natural sugars:

  • fructose
  • sucrose 
  • glucose

Because these natural sugars are digested by the body at different rates, the energy produced is both instant and prolonged.  This helps the banana to provide a sustained boost to flagging energy levels. 

Bananas are also an excellent recovery food and particularly useful for replacing the potassium lost in sweating. A lack of potassium can lead to muscle cramps.
