1. Melons were cultivated in Ancient Egypt and first introduced to Europe during the Renaissance (14th –16th centuries).
2. Melons grow on trailing vines and belong to the same family as cucumbers, marrows and squashes.
3. This fruit contains only about half the sugar content of an apple or pear, weight for weight.
4. The inner rind of a melon can be used to make jams or pickles.
5. A sprinkling of salt and pepper or ground ginger will enhance the flavour of a melon.
