Pineapple plants can be grown for decorative purposes and are a good choice as they are tough and tolerant of mal treatment
First and foremost you need to buy a Fyffes Gold pineapple. Cut off the crown (The top) and turn it upside down, letting it dry out for about 1 week.
In an 8 inch pot put good light soil with a 30% blend of organic matter. Plant the crown in the soil patting firmly around the base of the crown and not getting soil on the leaves. Fertilize immediately with a household plant food and repeat the feeding every 2 or 3 months afterwards. Water the soil lightly once a week.
The plant is a tropical plant so needs plenty of sunshine and warmth. Any freezing can damage the plant irreparably. Ideally the temperature shall not be allowed to drop below 5°C.
Patience is a virtue when growing your own pineapple. It can take 18 – 24 months for the flower to appear. The fruit follows from the flower. If there is no sign of the plant flowering after 2 years you can force the growth by placing the pot and plant into a plastic bag with an apple. Put the bag in a shady spot for about 3 or 4 days.
After 3 or 4 days remove plastic and put the plant back in direct sunlight. After a few more months a red cone should appear and afterwards blue flowers, eventually you will be rewarded and a fruit should appear. Depending on your ability to simulate tropical conditions you will be more or less successful in producing an edible fruit!
