COVID-19 – protecting our people every day

1st May 2020 |

On Labour Day 2020, Fyffes wants to thank all its people for their unwavering commitment and great efforts to stay safe and protect each other from the spread of COVID-19.

While in many industries work can be done remotely, our core products – bananas, melons and pineapples – must still be hand-picked, hand-packed and ripened before they reach store shelves. Thanks to the dedication and diligence of our employees, consumers can continue to find our delicious and healthy products in supermarkets around the world.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 virus, Fyffes health and safety compliance officers, human resources managers and leaders across the business have worked tirelessly to adapt our already strict health and safety protocols to respond to this unprecedented global pandemic. For the past two months, our Health and Safety Committees have focused on introducing specific measures aimed at protecting our employees and stopping the spread of the virus.

Speaking about the measures being taken, Fyffes Global Director of Compliance Hugo Hays said: “All our people have been incredible in how swiftly, proactively and resolutely they have adapted their normal working practices. We are all grateful for this positive attitude, which helps to ensure that everyone can continue to stay safe and healthy.”

On our farms, pack houses, at the ports and in the ripening centres, people have received specific hygiene guidance to avoid exposure and minimize the spread of the virus. Training and awareness raising on the importance of social distancing has ensured it is enforced in all areas, and employees have been provided with additional protective equipment. We’ve also introduced temperature screening and increased the frequency of cleaning and disinfecting of all our premises.”

During these challenging times, Fyffes continues to adapt to this new global reality, thanks to the vigilance of our employees who do their part every day to keep themselves and those around them safe.
