Community at home
Good community relations are part of the work ethic in Fyffes. We encourage all employees to make suggestions on how Fyffes can get involved even more, so that we can all grow together.
Community at Source
The Inspiration Centre, Belize City
Fyffes has worked with banana growers in Belize for nearly 50 years and we have become involved in a number of the local communities during that time.
Plastic recycling on Belizean banana farms and beyond
238,786 kgs of plastic tree bag waste was produced last year by the Belizean banana industry. That’s about the same weight as a fully laden Boeing 787 Dreamliner! (FYI, a tree bag is a plastic bag used to protect the banana bunch from pests and harsh weather conditions. It’s essential).
One Laptop per Child
Most of us probably take our easy access to smartphones and computers for granted and it’s difficult to imagine our children’s education without these simple tools. But in places like Uraba in the banana growing regions of Colombia, access to technology is almost impossible. Yet it is a key part of their social development and critical to improving the education of their children.
The Gesta Women
A great example of the work of Fundauniban is the recycling program run by the Gesta women. It’s created jobs for 250 women and is improving the environment. In 2000, Fundauniban supported the local community to start Gesta - an independent small business seeking solutions to social, economic and environmental problems.
San Marino Housing & Community
Another example of the fabulous work that Fundauniban does is in the region of Uraba, Colombia. The poverty that has gripped the area for decades means that housing continues to be one of the most pressing issues and many people in the local communities are without a clean, safe place to live. Families are often forced to share small houses and have three or more people sleeping in the same bedroom.
